Keith Ellison, Minnesota A.G.-elect, resigning as DNC deputy chair

Minnesota Attorney General-elect Keith Ellison resigned from his role as second-in-command of the Democratic National Committee Thursday, amid allegations of abuse by a former girlfriend.

The move comes just two days after Mr. Ellison defeated Republican attorney general candidate Doug Wardlow to become the nation’s first Muslim attorney general.

DNC Chairman Tom Perez said in an email that Mr. Ellison resigned to focus on his new position as Minnesota’s top law enforcer.

“His tireless service as deputy chair enabled us to make substantial progress in rebuilding our party and rebuilding trust with our grassroots,” Mr. Perez said.

Mr. Ellison won handily, but his campaign was dogged by abuse allegations raised by his longtime girlfriend Karen Monahan.

He strongly has denied the allegations.

The Minnesota Democratic Party launched a probe into Ms. Monahan’s claims and said in October they could find no evidence to confirm the abuse allegations.
